Dogs are social animals. That's common knowledge, of course. But, though known, it's often ignored. Individuals will often lock a lone dog away in a garage or pen, or on a rope in the yard for long periods. This isolation from contact with humans and other animals invariably leads to fear and/or aggression and other forms of maladjustment. Dogs need companionship in order to develop healthy behavior. A lot of the difficulty that faces many pet or dog owners–particularly first time ones–can be traced to a less than accurate assessment of each other’s roles in the relationship. In human-to-human relationships, there is often a bit of a tradeoff in roles between each partner, with each one assuming the dominant role at different times. This makes for a healthy dynamic that takes into account each other’s strengths and weaknesses and their natural variation.
This type of interaction is simply not feasible for a dog-human relationship however, since it will cause no small amount of confusion on the dog’s part.
In canine society, there is always an “alpha” role, which is typically taken on by the strongest and most dominant male in the pack. This alpha male largely dictates the actions of the rest of the pack, from their feeding times to their predatory habits. All the lesser animals are merely there as support and they are totally under the rule of this leader.
In the case of the dog-human relationship, you as the owner must assume the role of the alpha dog, regardless of whether you are male or female. You simply cannot allow your dog to exercise dominance over you or you will have no end of trouble wresting the control back. This fact forms the basis of any dog-training program that you will have your dog undergo, either at a puppy course, with a local dog trainer or at a dog school. It is all about control and if you do not have it, all your best efforts will be for naught.
Have you ever seen a person walking a dog or a puppy in the park and being pulled helplessly along by the animal tugging at his leash? This is clearly a scenario wherein the dog is not thoroughly conditioned to accept the human as his master. It makes you wonder in this case who really is in control of the situation.
Basic Dog Training
Now don’t automatically assume that just because you have to emphasize control over your dog that you should resort to physical means to do so. While in some extreme cases that may be the only option that is available to you with your puppy or young dog, you will find that with the proper training methods and a system of reward and association, you can achieve a state of almost total control without even having to raise your voice or lift a hand in anger.
Training a dog can be a difficult task, no matter size or breed and there may be times when you feel that it is not worth the effort. A little perseverance along with some common sense however will help you realize the benefits of a healthy and mutually respectful relationship with your dog.
Basic dog training can never start to early. Start when they are puppies with basic commands as "Come", "Sit" and the most important one -"No". No matter what breed your pet is, this is basic dog training which you don't have to attend a class, course, a trainer or have any formal education for achiving.
