But make no mistake about it: cleaning your aquarium is one of your most important regular tasks as an owner and this is the only way to ensure that your fish and various other marine creatures are happy, safe and able to provide you the enjoyment that you expect for a good long time to come.

You may first realize that there is an urgent need to remove algae from your tank when you notice a buildup of grime along the inside walls of your aquarium. The water in the tank may also be somewhat murky. These are both clear indicators that the pollutant level in the water has risen dangerously high and if you do not take action at the soonest possible time your fish’s health—and indeed their very lives—may be in jeopardy.

While any efforts that you undertake in order to correct this situation are most welcome (especially by your fish!) the time to act should have really come much earlier than this, before the condition of your tank has reached this state. Prevention is the best cure as they say and your task would have been made a lot simpler had you acted upon the problem before its ill effects have had a chance to manifest themselves.

There are many sources of information available on the subject, both on the Internet and through the more traditional printed sources such as books, magazines and pamphlets. You would do well as an aquarium owner to be well versed with the cleaning methods and procedures outlined in them to gain a thorough working knowledge of just what it takes to keep your aquarium clean. You will for example need to know the proper procedure to go through in order to avoid any risks to your fish and indeed to yourself. Remember, your aquarium will typically utilize a number of electrical devices and gadgets and with the water in the tank…well let’s just say that that does not really make for an ideal safety mix!

You will also need to know the proper method of handling your fish during this crucial operation. While we are sure that you only have your fish’s best interests in mind, you should be aware that they are somewhat fragile creatures and the stress associated with such a major undertaking could possibly be detrimental to their well being.

Do not worry though: by keeping in mind a few simple guidelines for cleaning your aquarium, your fish will soon be back swimming happily in a much cleaner and healthier environment.
